How Your Training Course will be Run
An initial assessment lesson to check your current competency for the licence you hold and allow our Assessor the opportunity to tailor make a training plan for you, discuss any issues you may have, any gearbox restrictions that need to be lifted etc.
Formal (Theory) Session – to confirm your underpinning knowledge of a Multi Combination Vehicle and the Environment in which they are used.
- This formal training is conducted face to face in small groups (1-4), in many situations this will be one on one basis.
- There is a workbook to complete that includes approximately 54 questions / exercises.
- Most of these exercises will be completed in the theory / face to face component of your training, but in some instances they may need to be completed in your own time.
- A short theory exam will be sat to confirm retention of this theoretical component of your course (approximately 54 questions).
- It is a closed book test – no reference material is allowed.
- It is permissible to undertake the theory exam orally for students who struggle with written English, however you must be able speak and understand English easily.
- It is not permissible to have an interpreter.
- A 100 % pass mark is required for competency.
- If you do not achieve competency in any part of the theory assessment and further training is required the situation will be discussed with you with a view to explaining the correct response and the importance of that particular element.
- It will be documented in your Assessment Tool.
- If your failure to achieve competency, was for something minor, you may be able to have a short break and re-take the assessment (or part of that assessment) on the same day.
- If it was a major shortfall in your theoretical knowledge, you may be given some additional material to pre-study at home and re-take the theory exam at a later date.
- The maximum allowable time is 2 hours for the Theory Assessment.
- Within the normal day to day delivery of the course, the formal theory training is done before the practical training commences. However in some instances, it may be possible to make adjustments to this to fit in with a student’s timelines.
- No more than 3 months should expire between completion of the theory training and the finalisation of the practical training. In these circumstances a refresher session of the theory component maybe required at an additional charge.
Practical Driving Session
- If a trainee holds a HR Licence then we will also need to work through a “in house” practical driving assessment for Heavy Combination and ensure that he/she is proficient at reversing a semi trailer and coupling and uncoupling before moving on to the MC.
- MC practical training and recording competencies.
- If all the competencies have been completed, the trainee is ready the Final Practical Competency Assessment will be conducted.
- Training will be continued until all the competencies have been completed, the trainee is ready the Final Practical Competency Assessment will be conducted.
- If you are not ready for Final Practical Competency Assessment and further training is required (this could well occur if you are lifting a B condition off your licence and learning how to use a non-synchro gearbox) the situation will be discussed with you. It will be documented in your Assessment Tool.
Practical Training
The Assessor will use a progress sheet to record each competency as you complete them. After each training session is completed your assessor will ‘sign off’ each successful competency in your Assessment Tool and then you will only need to concentrate on completing any outstanding competencies.
- Final Practical Competency Based Assessment
- When all the competencies have been completed the Final Practical Competency Assessment will be conducted
- The Multi Combination Vehicle may or may not be loaded
- In your final competency assessment you will have competencies (skills) assessed to make sure that your driving is both safe and consistent.
- Do not be alarmed if you think you are being assessed for the same thing twice. Some competencies are assessed more than once – this is to check that you have developed good driving habits.
- Normally an Assessor will be looking at several competencies at the same time.
- You are allowed 2 attempts at each “driving event / manoeuvre” within your Final Practical Competency Assessment i.e. 2 attempts at the reverse 2 attempts at the Hill start etc.
- If you do not achieve competency in any part of the practical assessment and further training is required the situation will be discussed with you with a view to explaining the correct response and the importance of that particular element
- It will be documented in your Assessment Tool.
- If your failure to achieve competency, during your practical assessment, was for something minor, you may be able to have a break of 1 hour and then commence the assessment again (or part of that assessment) on the same day
- After this any re-assessment fees will need to be covered by yourself at a cost of $450 . If a non-competent assessment was recorded and it was a major practical skill shortfall, you may have to undergo additional training at our facility or record some further hours in your Work Diary in your workplace before re-assessment. Additional costs of $175 per hour would apply
- During your practical assessment you may be asked questions verbally, these will be recorded by the assessor and will be part of your assessment.
