Can I drive a heavy vehicle with my existing licence?

There is no longer a requirement to have a learners permit to upgrade your drivers licence, however you must meet the age and comply with the necessary driving criteria for each heavy vehicle class. If you are unsure that you meet the requirements, you will need to seek advice from a Queensland Transport Customer Service Centre.

How do I get a Learner Licence to drive a heavy vehicle?

You must always drive with a person who has held a current open drivers licence for the type of vehicle of which you are learning to drive for at least a twelve month period.

You must have your Driver Licence on you at all times and be able to immediately produce your licence on request from a Police Officer.

What requirements apply while I am learning to drive?

You are still subject to all the provisions of a Learner Driver.

When learning to drive any class of heavy vehicle, the person instructing you to drive must hold a licence of the same or a higher class for a period of 12 months (not including a learner, provisional or restricted licence).

In the case of buses, the licensed driver must sit in the seat nearest you.  When learning to drive, “L” plates must be displayed at the front and the rear of the vehicle.  These are available from a commercial retail outlet.

You must have zero alcohol in your body at all times while driving a heavy vehicle.

How do I get my Heavy Vehicle Licence?

The practical driving test may be undertaken at any time provided that you meet the relevant age/experience criteria. If you are undertaking instruction with Brisbane Driving School, your driving test booking will be organised for you. Otherwise, to arrange the practical test you will need to pay a booking test fee at a Queensland Transport Customer Service Centre. Once this fee has been paid, you can then book a driving test at your nearest Queensland Transport Office.
You will be required to complete an application form at a Queensland Transport Office at the time of your practical test, which includes items such as; your personal details, previous drivers licences, and your driving history eg. offences you may have committed.

At this time, you will also be required to provide identification, and evidence of residence. For more information refer booklet Queensland Transports, Your Keys to Driving in Queensland.

You will need to pass a written roads rules test, prior to booking your practical test, If you have passed a written road rules test in the last 5 years you will only have to complete ten additional questions specific to heavy vehicles. To pass this test you need to answer eight out of ten questions correctly. For more information refer booklet Queensland Transports, Your Keys to Driving in Queensland.

Pass the practical driving test.

To undertake the practical test, you must supply a roadworthy vehicle that is appropriate for the class of licence for which you are applying. You must also have an appropriately licensed driver accompany you to the test.

The practical driving assessment will assess your driving skills and is conducted by a Queensland Transport testing officer. A period of 45minutes is allocated for a LR and 75 minutes for all other classes.

Once you have successfully completed the test you will be required to surrender your existing licence and you will be reissued with your new licence.

If you are not successful and wish to be tested again, a further booking fee applies.

Before undertaking a training course you will need to have held a car licence for 12 months. (unless moving from a C to a HR licence).
Further information is available from a Queensland Transport Customer Service Centre, Queensland Transport website or a Booklet obtained from Queensland Transport titled “Your Keys to Driving in Queensland".

Do I need to undertake a training course?

Brisbane Driving School will provide you with specialist heavy vehicle training in all classes. Quality training by our experienced trainers will assist you in obtaining your licence. Learning to drive a heavy vehicle through Brisbane Driving School will equip you with the necessary driver knowledge, and endeavour to make you become a safe driver.
Legally you are not required to undertake a training course, however it is highly recommended.

A manual cannot provide driving experience. Heavy Vehicle Licence applicants will benefit from the on-road and theory based driver training from experienced bus and truck drivers.

It is not feasible to cover every aspect of the knowledge and skills required to drive heavy vehicles, or the conditions under which you will drive, in the theory and practical tests available, however, we would recommend that you take advantage of professional training through Brisbane Driving School.

To obtain this Driver Authorisation you will need to satisfy a medical assessment and a police check on your background.

Visit a Queensland Transport Customer Service Centre for more information.

What if I need to carry dangerous goods?

If you are going to drive a vehicle transporting dangerous goods there are rules and procedures to be followed.

Rules apply to many categories, and information is available on the Queensland Transport website at www.transport.qld.gov.au/freight.

You must pass a recognised training course and carry your Bulk Driver Licence at all times when transporting dangerous goods.
